India is one of the important country manufacturing and exporting leather and leather products in the world. Indian leather industry occupies a prominent place in India’s economy mainly because of export earnings and large employment is provided by the leather industry, mainly to the socio economically weaker section of the society and to women. The leather industrial sector comprises of tanneries where raw hides and skins are converted into leather and factories transforming leather into a variety of consumer products such as footwear, leather garments and outerwears, and assorted leather goods such as violets, key chains, hand bags and briefcases etc.
Though the industry has been delimited from the small scale industry, major share of the manufacturing is still done in small and medium sector factories. Jalandhar in the State of Punjab is the leather industry hub providing large employment to the socio economically weaker sections of the people.
